The Aplat pattern calls for two 7.25'“ x 10.25’ pieces for their mask. I took that and made it 7.25 x 22.5. I got 22.5” by doubling 10.25 (20.50”) + 1” (.5 seam allowance on each end) + 1” for the additional fabric to make the channel for the nose piece. I pinked the edges to keep them from fraying.

Sew a hem on the edges as shown. You can fold them over twice to seal the raw edges if you like, though you may need to add a little more seam allowance to start if you want to do this.

Lay your fabric as show on the template. I place the fabric so it’s flush to the bottom and the sides. I added a little extra fabric because I’m adding a metal nose piece so the excess fabric I added will go on top. The hemmed edges should overlap slightly with the bottom flap on top.

Sew along the edge of the pattern as shown, leaving space for straps at the corners.

Fold over the top and sew a channel for your metal nose piece. I leave a 3/4” gap about 1/2” from one end.

Sew according to the pattern instructions. 1.25” to 1.5” depending on mask size desired.

Overall, I spent a lot of time trying to figure this mask out. I combined ideas from several similar folded masks to come up with this one. This is a fun mask to sew because it’s not fiddly, no pinning required! I don’t personally love the way this mask looks, I find it too bulky. But due to its boxy design, some people find this more comfortable to breath through as there is more space between the mouth and the mask. This pattern also benefits from being made with a thicker, sturdier fabric. Aplat suggests 10 oz weight, like a cotton canvas. The closest fabric I had to that weight was this speckled denim, which is probably a little too thick. This pattern makes a medium sized mask.
