real simple contacted me a few months ago, inquiring if i had any photographs of my mother that i'd like to share with them for an upcoming mother's day issue. i wouldn't normally have had anything to share with them but i had recently photographed my mother's funeral portrait as part of a personal project. though the image is a simple, studio portrait of my mother i was sure real simple would find the context of the image not mother's day-y enough but i sent it along anyway with a short description of how the photo came to be and what the process of making that picture meant to me. it surprised me that they chose to run the photo and to run it big. but not as much as it shocked my mother to see herself in print for the first time ever. it was a nice mother's day surprise for her. and caused a bit of a sensation amongst her friends. thank you real simple for a memorable mother's day!
