my husband was asked to guest art direct a cover for luxure magazine. the theme was fearless. the first idea to spring to his mind was to photograph our six year old son, emmett. emmett is a very typical young boy, full of curiosity and energy with not a speck of caution or fear. we brought our 8 year old son along and thought we'd photograph him just so he wouldn't feel left out. forrest is more studied, strategic and extremely cautious and sensible. the opposite of fearless. emmett was fidgety and bored quickly with being a model. we ended up spending more time photographing forrest. we had explained to him exactly what we were doing, what the word fearless mean and how we hoped to express the word as an image. he took it all in and was extremely thoughtful about his poses. my husband and i realized that forrest is fearless in a more internal way. he's an absolute individual who is impervious to peer pressure, social convention or the opinion of others. we hear the phrase, "follows the beat of his own drum" quite a bit about him. he likes to wear jewelry and grows his hair long, calmly correcting strangers that he is in fact a boy when they inevitably mistake him for a girl. he can be difficult but has great qualities and a strong character. but i see how the same qualities which would be seen as assets in an adult can be a burden to a child. it makes him hard for him to find peers with whom he can relate. i think this photo conveys his individuality quite well.
here is one of emmett's outtakes.
